Thackray Museum of Medicine Launches New ‘Choose Your Own Price’ Entry and Membership Scheme

The Thackray Museum of Medicine has announced a new initiative to make access to its award-winning museum more affordable and inclusive. From today, you can ‘choose your own price’ for entry, offering more flexibility and fairness for all visitors, whilst also unveiling a new local membership scheme for Harehills area residents starting at just £5.

This bold move comes as part of Thackray’s mission to ensure everyone can explore the incredible story of medicine.

Speaking on the changes, Edward Appleyard, CEO Thackray Museum of Medicine said:“By making Thackray affordable for everyone, we can help shape a better tomorrow. This is about making meaningful experiences and learning about medicine, healthcare and wellbeing accessible to all, with additional pay-it-forward options to help support our vital work with schools, families and our local community.”

Choose the Ticket That’s Right for You

Visitors can now select from four flexible pricing options:

• £9 | Lower Cost Ticket – A more affordable day out, no questions asked.

• £10 | Lower Cost Ticket plus £1 donation – making your spend stretch further by enabling the museum to claim vital gift aid

• £12 | Recommended Ticket – If you regularly grab a coffee, lunch or a takeaway, this is the ticket for you. The extra £3 helps fund free activities for over 15,000 children and supports the 6,000+ local people who use our building every year.

• £16 | Pay-it-Forward Ticket – Able to help others? Choose this ticket to support lower-cost visits and local memberships for those who need them most.

The recommended price of £12 helps cover the cost of operating the museum and caring for its 166-year-old Grade II listed building. Any additional amount supports Thackray’s activities for young people and its local community.

The Thackray Museum of Medicine has also revealed a new, affordable membership programme, offering year-round entry and a range of exclusive benefits.

Memberships start at just £20 per year, with discounted options for families and local residents:

• Individual Membership (16+) – £20

• Family Membership – from £23

• Thackray Local Membership – £5

• Thackray Local Family Membership – from £8
