Eat Out to Help Out in Leeds

The government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme is now open. The idea is to support the hard-hit food and drinks industry, to get more businesses through this completely unprecedented time.

Though we may have our thoughts on how well the initial rules were brought into place regarding the food and drink industry (telling people not to go out, but not ordering premises to shut, so they couldn’t claim on insurance? Nice one), we can get behind this scheme – to help all of us break out of our lockdown cocoons and venture out, and to support the valuable indies that make our city what it is.

What is Eat Out to Help Out?

This scheme allows restaurants to offer a 50% discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks, where they can be eaten on premises (up to a maximum of £10 discount per diner). The deal only runs Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, through the remainder of August.

So get out there and loosen your belt buckle!

Here are some of the businesses around the city running Eat Out to Help Out deals, and what the deals are:

Sarto

Informal pasta aficionados Sarto are basically offering a three-course meal for a tenner, Monday – Wednesday. Although Sarto are always good value, this is KILLER so well worth your reservation!

For £10, choose: Arancino or Focaccia snacks, then a choice of 3 pastas and finally a choice of tiramisu or torte (+ a 10% discount on a bottle of house wine with this menu). The government discount runs across the menu for Sarto, but this is how clients can maximise their order to make the most of it.

Bundobust

A similarly ace deal comes from our favourite purveyors of all things spicy and satisfying, Bundobust.

Choose any 3 dishes from their menu, plus a soft drink, for £10 (this is up to the value of £21.50). Again, we would pay substantial amounts of our salaries for this Gujarati goodness, so £10 for three courses and a drink is a massive no-brainer.

The Owl

Liz Cottam’s venture in the market has received rave reviews from the likes of the Guardian’s Grace Dent since opening. Take advantage of the discount to try them out, if you haven’t already!

Wonderful Cafe 164, an amazing cafe and arts/events space just south of the bus station for those who aren’t already in the know, will also be taking advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. 

Enjoy 50% off soft drinks and food, taking advantage of amazing flat whites and their freshly baked focaccia sarnies, plus a cake…go where the wind takes you. The discount is up to a maximum of £10 per person.

Authentic Malaysian flavours courtesy of Valerie Kolat, uniting the Malay, Indian and Chinese flavours which make up the country’s cuisine. Tangy, aromatic and spicy, Malaysian food is also a great treat for those with veggie, vegan or gluten free requirements.  Definitely a new taste to try, if you haven’t already, and a great location out of the city centre up in Chapel Allerton.

This behemoth of the Leeds food & drink scene are bringing their Eat Out to Help Out game strong, offering the 50% discount with no £10 per diner cap! So go mad, at Headrow House, Belgrave, Beck & Call or Water Lane Boathouse! Just remember the discount is only on food and soft drinks. 

If you’ve not tried Spitz at Ox Club, now is the time. This is kebabs, but not as you know it. Made using free-range, Yorkshire meat (or Döner Summer vegan ‘meat’), and with all sauces and salads made in house, this is what a kebab should really taste like. Out of the centre, try Beck & Call on Stainbeck Road for a classic pub grub menu, whilst Water Lane Boathouse serves up burgers and pizzas with a canal-side view, and Belgrave staples Dough Boys and Patty Smith offer up their amazing pizza and juicy burger-based delights.
