Last night – 2nd October – music icon Nile Rodgers and musician Matt Willis kicked off the much anticipated Leeds International Festival of Ideas in spectacular fashion. With an exceptional lineup of speakers, LIFI24 has fulfilled its promise of captivating its audiences. Hosted at Leeds Playhouse, the opening night set a dynamic and engaging tone for the days ahead, where attendees can expect more insightful discussions, lively debates, and innovative perspectives.

Kicking off with a compelling and honest fireside chat, Nile Rodgers and host BEKA went on a musical journey, having an inspiring conversation about the evolution of creativity and its profound impact on artists and listeners alike. Known for his work as a Grammy-winning producer, guitarist, and founder of Chic, Nile spoke candidly about his career and the roles that collaboration, politics, technology, and cultural trends play in reshaping the musical landscape. Alongside host BEKA, the pair discussed in depth the evolution of creativity and unpacked the seismic changes the music industry has undergone over the last 50 years – transformations that have redefined it now almost beyond recognition. “It’s a gift that I can still do music the way I have always done it despite the evolution in the industry; I’m never at a loss for any kind of musical idea,” said Nile. Debating what this means for both artists and listeners, Nile and BEKA charmed listeners with their authenticity and openness, offering a rare glimpse and inside scoop into the forces that drive creative innovation.

Meanwhile, musician Matt Willis and others joined esteemed author and journalist Lauren Windle in a powerfully vulnerable discussion surrounding the stigma, stereotypes, and challenges of addiction. Best known as a member of the musical group Busted, singer-songwriter Matt shared honest reflections about his own battle with addiction and the obstacles that often stand in the way of people being able to talk about their own experiences, ultimately highlighting the importance of open dialogue in breaking down these barriers. Delving into the complexities and stigmas surrounding addiction, the talk was filled with emotion and vulnerability as the diverse panel, including Marverine Cole, Claire Rimmer, Taylor Little, and Chris Sylvester, shared their personal stories of struggle and resilience. Led by Lauren, the panel provided a nuanced conversation about the first steps to acceptance, sharing their opinions on the roles played by support and education, and finally recovery.

“Almost 40% of women say they don’t want to talk about their gambling problems due to the stigma around it.”
Marverine Cole
“Acknowledging my addiction and beginning my sobriety journey has helped me to embrace honesty, I feel part of a community, and I don’t have to hide my addiction anymore.”

“The first night was incredible - it was amazing to see a record number of attendees in Leeds Playhouse. They say never meet your heroes but Nile was as humble as you can imagine. The conversations taking place after the panel chat on addiction around the building was inspiring, people helping people, and that is what the festival is about, bringing those conversations which aren’t always heard in public out into the open.”
